What is Kolvir?
In Roger Zelazny's
The Chronicles of Amber
series of novels, Kolvir is the mountain upon which the city of Amber
sits. The
site of the primordial pattern, it is a solid foundation upon which
order was drawn from a chaotic universe.
When I first joined the interwebs in the late 80's, I used Amber as my
domain and registered in the domain registry
at the time. I was connected to world via email though a UUCP feed
hosted first by polari and then connected.com.
About the time connected died it's horrible little death ISPs
providing email were becoming
cheap and somewhat ubiquitous. I decided to my email connectivity
through a more reliable service. About that same
time, the government decided to force some structure on the domain
system. Existing domains were grandfathered in, but
but only if you did the paperwork. I didn't, so I lost Amber.com.
In the late 90's I decided to host my own web site. Amber.com was long
gone, but Kolvir was available, so I snapped
it up. I got service that included a static IP and set up a server. Over
time it went through a few hardware iterations,
but it finally became apparent that, for stability reasons, I needed to
move to a hosting service. At first I was with
Network Solutions, but found it too expensive and limited. After many
years I finally got off my ass and moved it
to 1and1.com where it sits today.
